# Extraction Process

Undiscovered [asteroids](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/star-systems/asteroid-fields/asteroid-categories.md) need [scanning](#asteroid-scanning) before an extraction process can begin. The [**scanning**](#asteroid-scanning) can only be activated once the [ship](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar/industrial-ships.md) reaches the [asteroid](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/star-systems/asteroid-fields/asteroid-categories.md), meaning the distance to the [asteroid](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/star-systems/asteroid-fields/asteroid-categories.md) is 0 SU.

## Asteroid Scanning

**Astreoid scanning** can be initiated by clicking on the **Scan Traget** button in the[ **Ship Details** ](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map/ship-details.md)[widget](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map.md#widget) or directly through the [**Astreoid Details**](#asteroid-details) window.

## Extraction

An **extraction process** can only be triggered on targeted and [scanned](#asteroid-scanning) [asteroids](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/star-systems/asteroid-fields/asteroid-categories.md). To initiate an extraction, click on the **Start Mining** button in the [**Ship Details** ](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map/ship-details.md)[widget](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map.md#widget).&#x20;

Different types of [asteroids](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/star-systems/asteroid-fields/asteroid-categories.md) require specific [ships](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar/industrial-ships.md) for extraction. [Ice asteroids](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/star-systems/asteroid-fields/ice-categories.md) can only be mined with [Ice-type ships](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar/industrial-ships.md), while [Ore asteroids](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/star-systems/asteroid-fields/asteroid-categories/composite-ores.md) require [Ore-type ship](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar/industrial-ships.md)s. This is indicated both on the [**Asteroid Details**](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map/local-points-of-interest-lpoi.md#asteroid-details) [widget](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map.md#widget),[ **LPOI** list](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map/local-points-of-interest-lpoi.md) and on the [**Ship Details** ](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map/ship-details.md)[widget](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map.md#widget).

After completing the extraction process, the collected [ice](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/star-systems/asteroid-fields/ice-categories.md) and [minerals](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/star-systems/asteroid-fields/asteroid-categories/composite-ores.md) must first be transferred to the [ship's](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md#ship-details) [storage](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md#storage) using the **Collect** button in order to be able to proceed with the [ship](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md#ship-details).

An extraction can be terminated at any time using the **Collect** button, otwherwise [the time of the extraction may vary](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/star-systems/asteroid-fields/mining-in-sectors/mining-process.md) depending on the asteroid's size and the [ship's](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md#ship-details) [storage](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md#storage) capacity.&#x20;

To transfer the content of the [ship's](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md#ship-details) [storage](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md#storage) into the [warehouse](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/storage-complex.md), the [ships](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md#ship-details) frist needs to be warped back to the [**Hangar**](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md). This can be done by clicking on the **Warp home** button in the [Shid Details ](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map/ship-details.md)[widget](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map.md#widget).&#x20;

Once the [ship](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md#ship-details) is docked in the [hangar](/galactopedia/basic-game-pillars/hangar.md), it's state will change to "Docked", in the [Ship Manager](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map/ship-manager-ships-in-sector.md) [widget](/galactopedia/gameplay/star-map.md#widget).&#x20;
